Malta Bus Tickets and Passes 2026: Fares, Tallinja Cards and How Buses Work

Malta has no trains, trams or underground system, so buses form the backbone of public transport on both Malta and Gozo. The network reaches almost every town, resort and major visitor attraction. The difficult part is not finding a bus, but deciding which ticket or Tallinja card is best for your stay.

You can pay for a single journey when you board, buy a shareable card containing 12 journeys, or choose unlimited bus travel for four or seven days. The cheapest option depends on how long you are staying, how often you will travel and whether you plan to use Airport Direct or other premium services.

Malta bus fares in 2026

A single ticket can be bought from the driver using cash, a contactless bank card, a phone or a smartwatch. It remains valid for two hours and allows transfers between regular bus routes within that period.

Contactless payment is the easiest choice if you only need a few journeys. If you pay cash, carry coins or small notes. A €20 note for one ticket may be difficult for the driver to change. Each passenger needs a valid ticket or a correctly validated travel card.

Malta bus passes and tourist cards compared

Explore Adult, Explore Child and Explore Flex are for one person and cannot be shared. The exception is the 12 Single Day Journeys card. When several people board together, tap it once for each passenger.

12 Single Day Journeys: the shareable option

The €19 card contains 12 regular daytime journeys. Each journey includes transfers during its two-hour validity. It can be shared, making it useful for a couple or family that expects to use buses occasionally rather than several times every day.

A night bus or Airport Direct journey deducts two journeys per passenger. If two people take an eligible night service together, four journeys are therefore removed from the card. For intensive sightseeing, an unlimited pass is normally easier and may work out cheaper.

Explore Flex: Malta’s 4-day bus pass

Explore Flex is particularly important because it is Malta’s main four-day bus pass. Four days of unlimited bus travel cost €21 and seven days cost €27. The listed bus bundles include regular day routes, night routes, Airport Direct and selected Special Services.

Flex can also be loaded with packages combining bus travel with a Gozo Highspeed return journey, a harbour cruise, a two-island excursion or hop-on hop-off sightseeing. Some offers are seasonal, so compare the included departure and activity with the standalone price rather than assuming every bundle is automatically cheaper.

Explore Adult and Explore Child: unlimited buses for 7 days

Explore Adult costs €25 for seven consecutive days. Explore Child costs €7 and is intended for children aged 4–10; children under four travel free without a card. These passes are convenient if you intend to make several bus journeys most days, but they are not automatically the best value for a beach holiday or a stay that includes organised excursions and car hire.

Where to buy Malta bus tickets and passes

Single tickets are sold on the bus. Tourist cards are available from Malta Public Transport sales offices, card-dispensing machines and authorised retailers. At Malta International Airport, there is a sales point in the arrivals hall and machines near baggage reclaim and the Airport 2 bus stop.

You will also find sales points or machines at locations including Valletta Bus Terminus, Sliema Ferries, Buġibba, St Julian’s, Mosta, Rabat and Victoria in Gozo. Check the official list of sales offices and ticket machines before travelling to a particular outlet.

Can you buy a Tallinja card in the app?

The tallinja app plans journeys, tracks buses in real time and displays service alerts. It also manages Explore Flex credit and packages. Explore Flex can be purchased through the app, but the card must then be collected from a designated card-dispensing machine by scanning the supplied QR code or entering the collection code. The app is therefore useful, but it does not turn every tourist ticket into a phone-only ticket.

Are buses free in Malta?

Buses are not generally free for tourists. Free travel applies to holders of an eligible personalised tallinja Card with their name and photograph. Regular day and night routes and selected Special Services are then free, but paid services such as tallinja Direct and On Demand require credit.

A personalised Adult, Student or Gozo card currently has a €25 registration fee, while Child and Concession registration costs €5, plus any delivery charge. It is intended for residents and eligible long-term users rather than a typical holiday. You still need to tap the card every time you board, even when the journey itself is free.

Airport Direct is not the same as tallinja Direct

The similar names cause considerable confusion. Airport Direct routes are designed for airport connections and provide more luggage space and fewer stops. tallinja Direct routes are separate faster services identified by TD. Their fare and card rules are not identical, so do not assume that a card valid on Airport Direct automatically covers every TD service.

Night buses in Malta

Night routes are marked with an N. They do not represent an overnight version of the entire daytime network: only selected corridors operate, and some routes have just a few departures. Current connections include services from Valletta towards St Julian’s, Kalkara, Dingli and Żurrieq, a Sliema–Buġibba service and additional routes serving areas such as Marsaskala, Birżebbuġa and Siġġiewi.

A single night fare is €3. Night routes are included with Explore Adult, Explore Child and the timed Explore Flex bus products; the 12-journey card deducts two journeys. In April 2026, the operator introduced N3 Valletta–Kalkara, N52 Valletta–Dingli, N71 Valletta–Żurrieq and N120 Xgħajra–Pembroke and increased services on N13 and N212.

Always check the current route and timetable for the exact date. A town having a daytime bus connection does not mean that you can return there after midnight.

How buses in Malta work in practice

Signal clearly when the bus approaches

Drivers do not automatically stop at every bus stop. Stand where you can be seen and raise your arm in good time. Press the Stop button before your destination. Passengers normally board through the front door to buy or validate their ticket and leave through the rear door.

Allow for delays and full buses

Traffic, roadworks, village festas and passenger numbers all affect journey times. In summer and during commuter hours, a full bus may pass your stop without boarding more passengers. Do not plan the last possible connection when you need to catch a flight, ferry or booked tour.

The tallinja app is useful for live tracking, but it cannot remove delays caused by traffic. A timetable should be treated as the planned service, not a promise that the bus will reach every intermediate stop at the exact minute shown.

Do Malta bus tickets work in Gozo?

Malta Public Transport operates scheduled buses on both Malta and Gozo, so its bus products cover travel within the bus network on both islands according to the conditions of the selected product. The ferry journey between Malta and Gozo is separate and is not included merely because your bus card works after you arrive in Gozo.

When a ferry, taxi or sightseeing bus makes more sense

Between Sliema, Valletta and the Three Cities, a harbour ferry can avoid a long road journey around the water. For Gozo, the right departure point depends on where you are staying and whether you are travelling with a car. Which Malta bus pass offers the best value?

For a weekend with only a few planned journeys, I would pay for single tickets. For two people using buses occasionally, the shareable 12-journey card is often more economical. For four days built around public transport, Explore Flex at €21 is the most straightforward option.

For a week of frequent bus travel, Explore Adult at €25 costs less than the seven-day Explore Flex bus product at €27. Flex becomes more interesting if you need its four-day validity, Airport Direct certainty or one of the combined sightseeing products. If you will spend several days beside one beach, take organised tours or hire a car, do not buy an unlimited pass automatically.
