Mellieħa with Kids: Best Area in Malta for Family Beach Holidays?

Mellieħa is one of the best areas in Malta for families who want to stay close to a sandy beach and do not mind a quieter location in the north of the island. Before booking, however, it is important to know that the town is built on a hillside, and accommodation in the centre can be quite far from Mellieħa Bay.

Quick decision: I would choose Mellieħa if easy swimming with children, sand and a gently shelving beach are your priorities. If you already know this is where you want to stay, you can compare current accommodation options in Mellieħa. If you would rather have restaurants, urban amenities and a more convenient base for day trips without travelling long distances every day, Sliema is usually the more practical choice.

Family-friendly accommodation in Mellieħa: quick picks

Mellieħa has large seaside resorts, smaller hotels in the town centre and apartments suitable for larger families. When comparing them, do not look at price alone. Check the exact location as well: a hotel in the centre of Mellieħa does not necessarily mean you will be able to walk to the beach.

Family rooms are less common than standard double rooms, so it makes sense to check availability early for summer stays. If you are considering an apartment, confirm that it has air conditioning and a lift, and check how far it is from the nearest bus stop.

Where exactly should you stay in Mellieħa?

Mellieħa is not one compact beach resort. The best place to stay depends mainly on whether you expect to spend most of your time by the sea or would rather be closer to restaurants and everyday services.

• Mellieħa Bay / Għadira – the best option for families who want to walk to a sandy beach. There are fewer restaurants and shops than in the town centre.
• Mellieħa town centre – more restaurants, shops and bus connections, but it is built on a hillside. Most families travel to the beach by bus, car or taxi.
• Santa Maria Estate and the outskirts – a quieter setting with larger apartments and villas, although these areas are often less practical without a car.

If you are travelling with a pushchair or young children, always check both the location and the elevation on a map. A distance that looks short can feel very different in the heat when the walk is uphill.

Who is Mellieħa best suited to?

• families looking for a quieter holiday away from Malta’s busiest urban areas
• those who prefer a resort or a self-catering apartment

When another area may be a better choice

Mellieħa is not ideal for everyone. If you want to visit Valletta and other parts of the island by public transport every day, expect longer journey times. Families looking for a wider choice of restaurants, a promenade and easier connections without a car may prefer Sliema or St Paul’s Bay. Gżira can be a more affordable urban base, while St Julian’s is worth considering if you want a livelier atmosphere.

Beaches and family day trips from Mellieħa

The area’s main advantage is Mellieħa Bay, one of Malta’s easiest sandy beaches for families. Golden Bay and Għajn Tuffieħa are also on the north-western side of the island, although reaching Għajn Tuffieħa involves a long flight of steps. Mellieħa is also a convenient base for a boat trip to Comino. Tours differ in boat size, the length of their stops and their departure points, so I recommend first comparing the different ways to visit the Blue Lagoon. How much does accommodation in Mellieħa cost?

Prices vary depending on the season, the distance from the beach and the type of room. As a rough guide, expect:

• approximately €70–130 per night outside the high season,
• approximately €130–250 per night in summer and during school holidays,
• more for beachfront resorts and larger family rooms.

For a longer family stay, an apartment with a kitchenette may work out better than booking two hotel rooms. When comparing the total cost, however, include any transport to the beach, breakfast and other services that may already be included at a resort.

Do you need a car in Mellieħa?

If you stay near Mellieħa Bay and are mainly planning a beach holiday, you do not necessarily need a car. For occasional day trips, you can use the bus, a taxi or an organised full-day tour of Malta.
